A Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Ground
During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I figured I would book a place to stay upon arrival, but when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could just sleep at the airport ā only to discover that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate all night. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I caught a bus into town and found myself drifting towards the casino, reasoning I might spend the evening somewhere that was open all night. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing the admissions interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more people with such compassion.
It seems I seemed lost as a female student saw me loitering in the city center and inquired if I was OK. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she suggested I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at ANU ā a perfect solution, given that my the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: a leftover filled rolls she had from her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and somewhere safe and secure for the evening.
With hindsight, I now understand the significant risk she took as a woman inviting a guy who was a complete stranger crash at her place. At that time I existed within my male privilege bubble and did not consider about things like that. Now, as a father, it astounds me she did that ā but still deeply appreciative.
I never did attending that university, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but Iāve never forgotten that incredible gesture of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her act of kindness many times over. The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
