Two men have been arrested as an element of an probe into the tipping of several thousand of metric tons of rubbish in a open field in Oxfordshire, England.

Law enforcement stated that a man in his late sixties was apprehended at a property in Andover, Hampshire, while a 54-year-old was taken into custody in the town of Slough in association with the massive heap of rubbish tipped near the area of Kidlington.

These arrests come after a recent revelation which revealed the operation of in excess of 500 illegal tips throughout the country of England, encompassing at a minimum of 11 so-called "major sites" greater than 20,000 tonnes.

A spokeswoman for the environment body said that the apprehensions were for environmental and financial violations and were a "key step" in active inquiries. The apprehended men have been set free on conditional release.

Size of the Situation

The tipping ground in Kidlington, situated between the River Cherwell and the A34 road, is estimated to contain approximately 21,000 metric tons of waste in a mound which is up to 150m (490ft) in length and 6m (20ft) tall.

The overall amount of such larger sites is likely to be larger, as the environment body has earlier stated it does not maintain records on weight for every illegal dump.

The majority these sites are in rural locations, typically out of sight, and on land that is intended to be agricultural land.

Organized Enterprise

Authorities state numerous are operated by criminal organizations, who are making profit by charging significantly less than legitimate operators to receive and landfill garbage.

Firms have to incur site fees to use licensed waste facilities, contingent on the quantity and type of refuse they are trying to get rid of, and a disposal levy is also charged at just over £126 per ton.

Public Frustration

Preparatory efforts to remove the affected location started in recent weeks following worries over the risk of combustion and the consequences that would have on the nearby A-road.

A private waste clearance company has been given the job to deal with the site over the next 12 months at a price of £9.6m.

An enforcement officer for the national environment team stated that the agency would be aiming to recover the clearance costs under confiscation acts from anyone ultimately found guilty at the conclusion of its current investigation.

She further stated that this week's detentions would help "drive the investigation forward" and enable authorities to "investigate more lines of inquiry to understand in detail what transpired and who was involved".

"The unlawful site at this location was an appalling and calculated attack on our ecology and we understand the public's frustration at this egregious offence," she remarked.

A government representative supported the arrests, commenting: "This unauthorized dumping of waste at this location is disgraceful and has caused substantial detriment to the ecology and distress to the local residents.

"Our government is pledged to stamping out this kind of illegal activity throughout the UK, by boosting resources to address environmental crime, hiring more personnel and enacting stricter controls and penalties for those who violate the law."

The detentions were carried out on Thursday by agents from a dedicated organised crime team and come after an previous apprehension of a man in his thirties from the Surrey region in the autumn. He was let go awaiting more investigations.
