What hell is the world of governance. Survey that ministerial team: each person is grappling with extremely difficult portfolios without the means to do what they know is needed.

Their inheritance was even more ruinous than anticipated: they were handed explosive situations, dishonest traps and enormous voids. Leaving the European Union is proving to be more financially damaging than predicted, currently costing the exchequer £80bn annually.

The Challenges Building

They are blighted by bad luck: the Trump destroyer arrived during their watch. What worse mishap than a jail staff member freeing a rejected refugee sex offender? Channel migrants feel incessant.

An unfortunate internal party vote currently was certain to give Keir Starmer a difficult time. The minimal electoral backing at the Welsh parliament byelection might not even be their lowest point.

They prepare for criticism, but they are human. As often, the Labour MP dares say the obvious truth: that there is "deep disillusionment in this country at the moment" and "a growing sense of despair about whether anyone is capable of turning this country round".

Public Opinion Confuses

Nevertheless, the current vitriolic state of voter perception is perplexing and alarming. The Prime Minister is the most unpopular prime minister ever. Really?

He is a decent, serious man of noble purposes, without undue arrogance or ego. Compare that with the Conservative leader, the brief Conservative leader, or the casual assumption of the former Conservative leader, all with so little to explain their overconfidence.

Leadership Challenges

But, say the people, Starmer is worse. As prime minister, he demonstrates little leadership appeal, according to critics: more significantly, he is missing political agility, ingenuity or instinct for where the wind blows.

The government mishandled over cuts for retirees and individuals with special needs, offset by generosity elsewhere. Unsure which demographic to target, the party has left beneficial programs unpromoted, from working rights to environmental funding, housing projects and a youth guarantee.

Governing Philosophy

Too many senior advisors still think the Daily Mail-inflected right needs wooing, when nearly double the number of citizens have shifted progressive since the election was won. Survey specialist John Curtice cautions leadership to stop chasing Reform voters: they've departed.

Labour's leader is underperforming; this cannot be disputed when research shows no leader could ever return from such unprecedented lows.

But in unknown circumstances of such extreme volatility, conventional wisdom could prove irrelevant. The leader extracted Labour from the period following Corbyn condition of hopelessness that political analysts claimed couldn't be reversed in one term.

Potential Scenarios

Would anyone else perform more effectively, or have we reached a virtually unmanageable, insatiable public state of mind? All ruling parties may be opposed with similar speed once in power, despite overwhelming support, unless it arrives with immediate solutions bearing untold bounty for struggling state institutions and empty private purses.

Predictably, panic on the back benches will make discussion about replacing the leader commonplace if May's elections go as badly as predicted – or, some suggest, earlier.

Potential Solutions

This represents the government's dilemma: The government's best chance emerges from difficulty. Accept they might be overwhelmed anyway, so employ their parliamentary advantage for the remainder of the term to follow their natural left-leaning values: implement substantial tax changes, raising plenty.

Prepare for opposition the next election, so take decisive action currently. Disregard popularity ratings and public consultations; enable the public to witness sincerity in their purpose. The exclusive approach to regain public trust is to implement openly what they believe most correct and reasonable.

Rachel Reeves rightly calls Reform "the single greatest threat" to British values. As the Tories virtually merge with Reform, an electoral pact of certain type threatens.

Labour's duty is to do whatever it takes to stop this development. Anticipate alliances, be acceptable to like-minded parties when the name of the party becomes secondary to the fundamental boundary against an electoral threat unseen in contemporary politics.

This represents a mission to drive out despair.
