Israelis have assembled throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled formal memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.

The source stated the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the arrangement.

He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Public Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling lived through the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No location seems like home any longer and until all the hostages come back none of us will be secure."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Activist one woman explained: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be secure."

Surveys now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israelis desire the war to end in return for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the morning of that day in the west side district, area and locality areas and in the eastern district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the evening falls, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had received the corpses of several people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area reported additional dead people had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south, medics said.
