Jailhouse Surprise: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He contested justice and justice won.

Sixty days following getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally appears destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The convicted plotter – who's been living under residential detention in his residence while a series of legal procedures and petitions play out – is widely expected to be jailed in the near future, amidst growing talk that he will be sent to a well-known top-security facility.

Past Statements on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the conservative ex- paratrooper showed little compassion for the country's inmates.

“Why should we offer those scoundrels a easy time?” he once pondered. “They should just get screwed, end of story. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to finish there, you simply need is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”

Jail Destination Debate

Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, several of whom this week visited the facility in an seeming bid to discourage the judiciary from banishing him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, claimed he expected the septuagenarian figure to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute gut problems – the consequence of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about packed cells and the quality of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells holding forty prisoners: “That’s almost one meter squared per inmate.

“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the horrible food,” remarked the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

He is not the sole person speaking out before the former president’s anticipated incarceration.

Authoring in a leading newspaper, another ally, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the biggest unfairness in its history”.

“This is an injustice that eats away the hearts of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed General Reaction

This could be accurate due to the considerable support Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. However his anticipated incarceration has also pleased the spirits of many others who think he deserves to be jailed for plotting to stop the elected leader from assuming office – and also conspiring to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the sitting leader's allied group, said: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive proper treatment – but dignified care behind bars. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time applauding the severe conditions of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their rights. “Only now has the far-right – which has always claimed that civil liberties are not for criminals – opted to visit a jail to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, insulting treatment”.

Potential Jail Environment

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently houses about fourteen thousand inmates, his expected location seems to be a close jail for law enforcement and other “unique” inmates called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are much more adequate than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro had while occupying the spectacular official residence, about a short distance away.

As per information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the area of two parking spaces – and includes a 130 square foot bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre veranda. “He could be permitted to have a TV and additionally a small fridge in his room as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” sources stated.
