Mikel Arteta feels assured that his side can keep managing with fitness issues after confirming that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been out for months after undergoing knee surgery. Originally slated to be available at the start of this month, Arteta revealed the player hit a snag when stepping up his rehabilitation and failed to reach “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash

This development presents a selection headache for the midweek home game against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role last weekend, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly off the bench as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also in contention after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Additional concerns surround centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the weekend encounter. As a result, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta feels the £250m spend on reinforcements in the last transfer window has placed the club in a much stronger position to handle such unavailability.

Greater Options Key to Premier League Pursuit

When asked if a larger pool of players was aiding their championship push, the manager agreed. “Yes, because this season has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz

Commenting on the complication noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the required step and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”

He shared his eagerness to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, for me, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his character, his attitude. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”
