The direst potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by researchers, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 2-metre increase in sea levels. An alternative projection envisions a drop of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and energy needs.
Credible Events, Not Forecasts
These impacts, certain ones are connected to irreversible climate shifts, are seen as improbable but possible. The scientists explained that these models plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.
"The severe weather events we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are plausible," commented the professor who oversaw the study. "The nation has been planning lacking the frameworks to assess catastrophic outcomes. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to prepare for climate outcomes they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Range of Extreme Weather Projections
Another collection of dire projections details the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that temperatures could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be 300% of standard measurements.
The probability of the extreme scenarios occurring could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what action will be taken to address global heating and how the Earth's systems will react. This approach was compared to defence planning or scenario planning for economic stability.
Critical Outcome Highlights
- Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts breaks down or if vicious cycles such as the Amazon rainforest becoming a net carbon source emit its huge repository of carbon. This would result in extreme and prolonged heat domes and dry spells affecting the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and losing stability due to ocean warming. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Crop production would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be completely altered," explained Arnell.
- Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if polar ice in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, inundating coastal cities and towns. Differing from the other scenarios, this possibility is already recognized by infrastructure experts.
- Aerosol Effect: Temperatures could also be increased by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is rapidly cleaned up. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from burning coal block solar radiation from warming the ground.
Preparing for the Extreme
The worst-case scenarios could be applied to guide the building of critical national infrastructure, such as expanded cities, power generation facilities and urban drainage systems. Knowledge about these future hazards could also hasten the push to reduce fossil fuel emissions.
The study created the worst-case scenarios using a combination of past data and records, digital projections and climate physics. The possibilities do not take into account potential global problems such as the global food shortages and increased conflict.
The research was initiated as part of a government’s adaptation planning initiative. Independent analyses have stated that not enough attention was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
An independent advisory body has said that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and assess the threats for 4C. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "very weak" by environmental groups.
