Vince Zampella, the mind behind the globally famous video game Call of Duty, has passed away in a traffic collision in the state of California aged 55.

His passing was announced by Electronic Arts, which owns Respawn Entertainment, the video game company that he helped create.

The influential video game developer lost his life when his vehicle was involved in a crash and was engulfed in flames on a motorway in Los Angeles on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"This represents a heartbreaking loss, and our deepest sympathies go to Vince's loved ones, those closest to him, and everyone impacted by his legacy," an official with Electronic Arts said.
