The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.
