When an teenage creates Real Madrid history in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team chase future success.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Manchester.
